The setting is Tunisia on the eve of the 2010 Jasmine Revolution; a young woman attempts to retain her independence in the face of tradition and expectation in Leyla Bouzid’s sparkling debut feature.

Eighteen-year-old Farah (Baya Medhaffer, magnificent in her debut performance) may have been accepted to medical school but all she wants to do is sing in her politically charged rock band, much to the chagrin of the numerous authority figures in her life, including her mother Heyet who has resigned herself to life as a second-class citizen and sees something of her younger rebellious self in her spirited daughter.
